OpenAI has announced plans to open its first office in India, marking a significant step in its expansion into one of the world’s fastest-growing technology markets. The company will set up a corporate office in New Delhi and build a local team to strengthen ties with Indian businesses, developers, academic institutions, and government bodies.
The move follows OpenAI’s recent launch of ChatGPT Go, a new subscription plan priced at ₹399 per month, designed specifically for Indian users. It is part of a broader strategy to make AI tools more accessible in the price-sensitive South Asian market and to compete with global and local players like Google, Meta, and Perplexity.
“Opening our first office and building a local team is an important step in our commitment to make advanced AI more accessible across the country,” said OpenAI CEO Sam Altman. India, the world’s second-largest smartphone and internet market, offers a huge user base and a growing appetite for AI-driven tools. However, monetisation remains a challenge for AI companies operating in the region, where many users prefer free services.
To deepen its presence, OpenAI has been building leadership in the country. In April, it appointed former Meta and Truecaller executive Pragya Mishra as its public policy lead and brought on former Twitter India head Rishi Jaitly as a senior advisor to work on government relations and AI policy.
OpenAI also announced it would host its first Education Summit in India this month and its first Developer Day in the country later this year. The new office in India will be its fourth in Asia, after earlier openings in Japan, Singapore, and South Korea.
