India Rolls Out E20 Petrol Nationwide: What Drivers Need To Know

Concerns have surfaced on social media, with owners of older cars and bikes claiming reduced performance.

India has crossed a major energy milestone with the nationwide rollout of E20 petrol, a blend of 20% ethanol and 80% petrol, in July 2025—five years ahead of its original 2030 target. The move is part of the government’s Ethanol Blended Petrol Programme, aimed at cutting crude oil imports, reducing carbon emissions, and boosting farmers’ incomes by sourcing ethanol from crops like sugarcane and maize.

The government says the programme has already saved over ₹1.4 lakh crore in oil imports and reduced greenhouse gas emissions equivalent to planting 30 crore trees. For 2025 alone, the scheme is expected to save ₹43,000 crore while paying nearly ₹40,000 crore to farmers. On the road, however, drivers are divided. Ethanol contains less energy than petrol, so some motorists report a 2–20% drop in mileage and fear possible damage to engines.

Concerns have surfaced on social media, with owners of older cars and bikes claiming reduced performance. Experts insist the reality is less dramatic. The Automotive Research Association of India (ARAI) and oil companies confirm that most vehicles experience only a 1–3% efficiency loss, with no widespread engine damage. Transport Minister Nitin Gadkari has admitted mileage may dip slightly but stressed there is “no harm to engines”.

Compatibility is key. All vehicles manufactured after April 2023 (BS6 Phase-2) are designed to run smoothly on E20, thanks to upgraded engines, seals, and fuel systems. Older vehicles can still use E20, though drivers may notice marginally higher fuel consumption and wear on rubber components. By joining countries like Brazil and the US in embracing higher ethanol blends, India signals a cleaner, more self-reliant energy future. For motorists, the takeaway is simple: newer cars are E20-ready, and older ones may sip a bit more, but won’t suffer serious damage.
