Linda Yaccarino has announced she will step down as CEO of Elon Musk's social media platform X after two years in the role. The reason for the resignation has not been officially disclosed by either Yaccarino or the company. In a post on X, Yaccarino expressed gratitude to Musk for entrusting her with the task of "protecting free speech, turning the company around, and transforming X into the Everything App." Musk responded with a brief message: "Thank you for your contributions."

Yaccarino had previously worked as a head of advertising at NBCUniversal. Appointed in 2023, Yaccarino's leadership at X, formerly Twitter, was widely seen as symbolic, with limited authority in key strategic decisions. Observers often referred to her as CEO "in name only." During her term, X sued a major advertising industry group for an alleged effort to boycott the platform. The platform, previously criticised for left-leaning content under Twitter, has since shifted toward right-wing narratives.

The resignation comes amid broader challenges for Elon Musk, including declining sales at Tesla and mounting controversies surrounding his AI venture, xAI, which took over X in March 2025. The platform has faced backlash for antisemitic content generated by its AI chatbot Grok. Speculation also surrounds Musk's continued dominance at X despite stepping down as CEO, while some suggest his outspoken behaviour may have contributed to her departure.
